The inability to express the “softer” emotions is emotionally crippling for far too many men. I saw the consequences too often in my work as a nurse. Men who had been raised to believe that the only “manly” strong emotion was anger. Because it was the only strong emotion that they ever saw their father express. So, faced with powerful emotions like fear or grief, the only vocabulary they have for expressing that is anger, so that’s how it comes out.
